A belligerent drunk man at a Waffle House damaged a police patrol car and officers had to call the fire department to remove the leg shackles they placed on him.
Orange police were called to the Waffle House on Highway 62 about 11 p.m. after people reported a man wearing khaki shorts and a blue shirt was trying to fight customers.
Officer J. Kirkpatrick reported he saw a man matching the description at a parking lot nearby and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. He said the man was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech.
Police arrested the man for misdemeanor public intoxication and put him in the back of a patrol vehicle. Officer Kirkpatrick said the man started slamming his head into the back passenger window. Even after being told to stop, he continued to hit his head on the window.
Police officer removed him from the vehicle and Officer Kirkpatrick reported “he was hog tied with leg restraints.”
At the Orange County Jail, the jail staff could not remove the shackles because the cuff was jammed into the man’s sock and would not come undone. The Orange Fire Department was called to the jail to cut the shackle off.
Officer Kirkpatrick reported the door frame on his patrol vehicle was bent after it was hit. The door would not close flush at the top.
Police said 20-year-old Jackie Lee Huffman III faces misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and criminal mischief.
