Pitchers dominated for five innings Friday evening at Lady Bear Field. After both teams threatened to score in the sixth, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals plated three runs in the seventh inning with two outs to capture the contest 3-0 over the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears.
Topping her performance from Tuesday night Lady Cardinals’ pitcher Kassidy Wilbur got the complete game shutout for Bridge City (2-1) allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 16. Wilbur helped her own cause driving in a run in the decisive seventh.
Matching Wilbur in the first five innings for Little Cypress-Mauriceville (2-1) was Briana Frenzel with 8 strikeouts. She held the Lady Cardinals scoreless giving up just two hits and a walk as well. Frenzel got one of the two hits off Wilbur with a triple to the leftfield fence in the first. The hit came with two outs, and Frenzel was stranded at third when Wilbur struck out Ashley Short on a 3-2 pitch.
Coach Dena Adkins relieved Frenzel to start the sixth inning with Jenna James for the Lady Bears. Wilbur led off the inning reaching on an error. Kyndall Harrison lined a single to right which put Lady Cardinals at first and second with no outs. Caitlin Denison advanced both runners with a bunt. Frenzel made a superb play at third base on a hard grounder by Chloe Halliburton, looking Wilbur back to the bag before throwing to first for the second out. James got out of the jam by striking out the next Bridge City batter.
In the bottom of the sixth LC-M mounted its biggest threat of the game. Madison Murdock worked a one-out walk off of Wilbur. Morgan Weaver laid down a bunt with serious backspin that Denison bobbled and then threw errantly down the rightfield line. Murdock rounded third, but was held there by Coach Adkins. Wilbur bore down and struck out Frenzel and Short to keep the game scoreless heading to the seventh.
With one out Natilee Reed drew a walk. She was sacrificed to second by Peyton Trapp. Reed scored the first run of the game on a single to center by Abby Anderson who went to second on the throw to the plate trying to nip Reed. Wilbur drove Anderson home with a line drive to right and took second on the throw trying to get Anderson. Wilbur then came in on Harrison’s ground ball single up the middle.
The bottom of the seventh was an exclamation point for the Lady Cardinals pitcher. Wilbur struck out the Lady Bears in order to record five straight Ks to end the game.
Both teams play again in one week on Friday, March 31. The Lady Cardinals will be at home against the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs. The Lady Bears travel to Orangefield to play the Lady Bobcats.
