Two Pinehurst restaurants had low scores during February’s health inspections. JJ Wings and Seafood on MacArthur Drive had a 75 and Kotoyama, also on MacArthur, had a 70. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales reported finding dead and live roaches throughout Kotoyama, and reported the kitchen hand-washing station did not have running water, either hot or cold.
In the past few months, Scales has handed out mostly A’s and B’s during inspections of restaurants and food businesses. During February, he went to 39 food establishments and gave ten perfect scores.
The perfect ones were Vidor Junior High, Pine Forest Elementary, Bridge City Middle School, West Orange-Stark Elementary, Wendy’s on Highway 62 in McLewis, Lollipop Stop Children’s Care in Vidor, Just for Kids Daycare in Bridge City, Gina C’s Catering in Vidor, Neches Grocery in Vidor, Once Upon a Time Child Care in Bridge City.
Kotoyama had 16 violations. They included not having food handler certificates on any employee needing dates and labels on foods. Mold and slime were found inside the ice machine and the ice scoop was stored improperly. Soap and towels were needed at all hand-washing stations. Ice buildup was preventing the freezer door from closing. Boxes and buckets of food were stored on the floor inside the walk-in freezer, cooler and kitchen storage floor. Foods were also stored improperly inside the coolers and freezers. In addition, the inspector reported old foods and grease had built up on floors, walls, and ceilings, especially around air vents.
JJ Wings and Seafood had 14 violations listed. They included raw fish stored inside a sink of water. Mold and slime on the drink dispensers. Labels and dates were needed on foods. Hair restraints were needed. Foods were stored on the floor throughout the restaurant. Employees did not all have food handler certificates. Soap and paper towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Containers of sauce were opened and sitting on top of the counter instead of stored in the cooler. Floors and walls throughout the restaurant needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash.

The Hut, 1804 16th Street in Orange: 98. Dates were needed on products inside coolers.
Caryn’s Bakery, 605 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 98. Store did not have 2017 food service permit.
California Corn Dog Stand, 795 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Current health inspection report was not posted in the front.
Tropicana Ice Cream Parlor, 2637 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Containers of ice cream were not covered inside the reach-in freezer. Air returns needed to be cleaned of dust build-up.
Family dollar, 11701 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 97. Inspector pulled several dented cans from shelves.
Brookshire Brothers Grocery, 1380 North Main Street in Vidor: 95. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans. Gnats were on onions inside the produce department. Current health inspection report was not posted in front of the store.
Elements Cafe and Baker, 1055 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. Dates were needed on all products. Several gnats were in the back storage area. Storage shelves, equipment and floors needed to be cleaned of old foods. Wall in back storage area was damaged and needed to be repaired. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
Stop N Drive, 1510 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 94. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Paper towels were needed inside restroom. Current health inspection report was not posted in front of store.
Burger Town, 6223 West Roundbunch Road in Orangefield: 94. Ice machine’s front panel was missing. Hair restraints were needed. Area around fryers and Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Star Stop, 11384 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 93. Chicken, beef and sausage were stored improperly inside reach-in coolers and freezers. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing.
Robert’s Meat Market, 3720 West Park Avenue in Pinehurst: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from shelves. Paper towels were not at the hand-washing sink. Floor tiles were missing or damaged. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned. Hand-washing signs were needed at the hand-washing sinks.
Zuniga’s Mexican Food, 1925 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 91. Faucet was missing at three-compartment sink. No certified food manager or handlers were on staff. Floors, especially in back storage building, needed to be cleaned of old foods. Latest health report was not posted in front of restaurant. No first aid kit on site.
Casa Ole, 1015 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Mold was inside the ice machine. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Latest health inspection report was not posted in front of restaurant.
Brookshire Brothers Deli, 1380 North Main Street in Vidor: 87. Meat was stored improperly and foods needed to be covered inside the walk-in cooler. Fryers and fry baskets needed to be cleaned of old grease. Several fly traps were hanging from ceiling. Several employees were wearing improper jewelry. Boxes of food were stored on floor inside walk-in freezer. Meat was defrosting inside a sink of water. Area around stove and fryers needed to be cleaned. Walls and areas around air vents needed to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted in front of store.
Delta Food Mart, 705 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 87. Chicken was stored improperly inside cooler. Mold and slime were on drink dispensers. Employee did not have food handler certificate. Several dead geckos were behind the fryers and needed to be cleaned immediately. Chicken was defrosting at the three-compartment sink. Lights needed to be replaced in the back storage area. Light shields needed at all lights inside walk-in cooler and on sales floor. Floors near fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Dairy Queen, 321 Strickland Drive in Orange: 86. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Motor inside walk-in cooler was dripping water on top of chicken and dumpling bags. Employees in kitchen were using bare hand contact with ready-to-eat foods instead of gloves. Employee had nose ring. Storage shelves, especially in kitchen, along with floors under and around fixed equipment needed to be cleaned of old food and grease. Inspector recommended more daily general cleaning.
Break Time, 3900 North 16th Street in Orange: 84. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods. Chemicals were stored above pet foods. Not hot water or paper towels were inside employee restroom. Dead bugs found inside most light shields. Drinks stored on floor inside walk-in cooler.
