The sound of BBs rattling in a container helped Orange police target two adolescent boys as the Camellia Street BB shooters. They were caught Saturday evening after about two weeks of mischief in the Roselawn neighborhood.
Windows on cars and pickups were damaged four times. In the early morning of January 31, a man who opened his door to check a noise outside was shot in the chest. He had a slight abrasion but did not seek medical attention.
Officer T.P. Pruitt reported he was called to the 400 block of Azalea Street about 7:30 p.m. Saturday after a report that a window had been shot.
Detective Captain Robert Enmon said police had increased patrols in the area and other officers were nearby.
Officer Pruitt said a report came that two boys were going through mailboxes in the 500 block of Crepe Myrtle. He stopped the two. Though they denied having a BB gun or ammo, he heard the metallic sound of the BBs jingling from the pocket of one of the boys.
He said one admitted to having BBs and finally another confessed to having the pistol. It was stuck in the back of his pants and hidden behind his shirt.
Police ended up confiscating the pistol, a container of 6000 Copperhead BBs and a total of 13 Daisy carbon dioxide cartridges used in the pistol.
The boys are ages 12 and 13. They were released to their mothers. Juvenile charges could be filed.
