
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales had to use a lot of ink to mark demerits during his visits to restaurants and food businesses in the last half of January. He went to 30 places with several earning scores in the 80s. The Donut Palace in Mauriceville had the lowest score, 77. Spider webs were a problem there and at other places.
He also gave nine perfect scores, mainly to schools. The businesses earning a score of 100 were the Jumping Bean on Highway 87 North in Little Cypress and the Subway on 16th Street in Orange.
The schools with perfect inspections were Little Cypress High, Vidor Elementary, Oak Forest Elementary, Bridge City High, Tekoa Academy in Orange, Building Blocks Academy in Vidor, and Bright Horizon Learning Center in Vidor.
In addition, Scales made a pre-opening inspection with no score for Rock’s Spot Barbecue on Texas Avenue in Bridge City. He found no violations at Trinity Baptist Church in Orange for the soup kitchen, but he does not score the charity feeding programs.

Cleven’s Southern Cookin’, 9435 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 99. The Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Market Basket Deli, 3709 North 16th Street in Orange: 98. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Latest health inspection report was not posted in the front of the deli.
Judice’s Cajun Cafe, 2045 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Crawfish and pork dressing were defrosting inside container on storage shelves. Vent-a-Hoods needed to be cleaned of old grease. Floors needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease, especially under and behind fixed equipment. Screen on back door needed to be repaired. Broken and unused equipment need to be repaired or removed from the back storage area.
McDonald’s, 1710 North 16th Street in Orange: 97. Dates and times were not on vegetables on the serving line. Inspector recommended coffee station area be cleaned more often.
Walgreen’s, 1305 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Latest health inspection report was not posted in front of store.
Bright Beginnings Learning, 1025 Church Street in Vidor: 96. No hot water at dish sinks. No thermometers inside the reach-in cooler and freezer.
Fast Stop Food Store, 2410 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and back storage room. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Paper towels were needed inside the employee restroom.
Smokers Express, 1050 16th Street in Orange: 95. Mold found on slush machines. Back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Broken and unused equipment in the back storage area needed to be repaired or replaced. Latest health inspection report was not posted in front of store.
Chevron Food Mart, 2323 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 94. Cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods. Employee restroom did not have hot water and paper towels. Store was under construction with new walk-in coolers and store updates. Bottom of back door needed to be resealed.
Pop’s Place (The Pit Stop), 234 South Main Street in Vidor: 91. Bags of food were stored open inside reach-in freezer. Certified food manager certificate was not posted in front of store. Door to reach-in freezer was damaged. Defrosting boudain balls and raw chicken were on county. Area around grill and fryers needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.
Freeway Express, 115 East Freeway in Vidor: 90. Inspector found several expired foods on shelves. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Drinks were stored on the floor. Light shields needed inside walk-in cooler. Employee restroom needed paper towels. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front of store.
Step-N-Go, 234 South Main Street in Vidor: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Standing water was inside the reach-in cooler. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Floor tiles were missing in the back storage area. Back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Lights shields were needed.

Insulation was exposed inside ice machine. Dates were needed on products inside reach-in cooler. Spider webs were in back storage area. Light shields needed in back storage area. Hole was in wall of storage area. First aid kit was needed.
Star Stop, 1104 Burton Avenue: 84. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold was on drink dispensers and on slush machines. No food handler certificates in store. Restroom did not have hot water. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks store on floor and stairs in back storage room. Bed found in upstairs room and needed to be removed. First aid kit was needed.
Ming’s Buffet, 840 North Main Street in Vidor: 80. Salads were not at proper temperatures. Foods stored on floor in coolers and freezers. Restaurant did not have food handler certificates. Water was standing inside coolers. Dates needed on products. Paper towels were needed at hand sink. Fly strips were hanging from ceiling in prep and kitchen areas. Employee drinks were stored improperly. No sanitized towels. Foods needed to be covered. Storage shelves were rusted. Vent-a-Hood and floors needed to be cleaned. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Unused and broken equipment needed to be discarded.
Donut Palace, 11258 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 77. Boxes of eggs sitting on floor. Eggs and sausage were not at proper temperatures. Sausage and bacon were stored improperly. Raw dough stored in plastic grocery bags. Plumbing needed to be repaired. Gaskets needed to be replaced. Soap, water and towels needed at hand sink. Water was standing inside coolers. Dollar General, 2500 MLK Drive in Pinehurst: 89. Inspector pulled several dented cans and expired foods from shelves. Gasket at the milk cooler was damaged and needed to be replaced. Spider webs were in the back storage area. Shelves inside the milk and egg coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Spill was on the sales floor near the back storage area.
