Justice of the Peace Derry Dunn said the man who died in a Sussex Manor apartment had a history of heart and kidney problems. Pending the results of a toxicology report, the judge has tentatively ruled the man died of natural causes.
Pinehurst police on Monday had an emergency call that the man had been stabbed. Judge Dunn, whose Precinct 2 includes Pinehurst, said 54-year-old Raymond Lynn Maddox had no wounds except for a small cut on a finger.
Pinehurst police went to the apartment complex about 12:30 p.m. Monday after a call. Police Chief Fred Hanauer in a written release said the preliminary information was Maddox had been stabbed. At the apartment, police first believed a robbery may have occurred. The Orange County Homicide Investigation Team and the Texas Rangers were called to the scene.
Judge Dunn said Maddox had a history of heart and kidney problems, including congestive heart failure. In addition, a relative of Maddox told investigators he had a long history of abusing drugs. The autopsy toxicology report, which takes a few weeks, will show if drug use contributed to the death, he said.
Judge Dunn said Pinehurst police had been called to a disturbance at the apartment about 1 or 2 a.m. Saturday. Maddox had kicked in the front door after the woman he lived with had locked it.
