The winning streak has been extended to seven straight for the Bridge City Cardinals. Head Coach Dwayne DuBois is impressed with the way his Cardinals have made comebacks to win the last few weeks. They rallied late to beat Center in the first week of the playoffs and trailed Bay City 19-14 late in the second quarter before scoring the last 25 points of the game. He reminds the players the game is 48 minutes and to play hard all the way through it. DuBois reflects, “It’s been fun for the kids, that’s what I am excited about. They’re having fun; I think they’d like to win more.”
Bridge City will try to make it eight straight this week against Stafford. DuBois says the Spartans are led on offense by their junior quarterback Walter White. He has passed for a little over 1700 yards and rushed for about 400 yards. The coach thinks White likes to throw it more than run it, but he is definitely a dual threat with the football.
Joining White in the backfield is James Brown who is a thousand yard rusher again for the Spartans. When he does throw the ball, White likes to spread it around to several receivers including Hezekiah Jones who leads Stafford in receptions with around 30 catches. The Spartans’ Spread has scored over 500 points on the season. Coach DuBois points out, “They can light up the scoreboard and they can light it up quick.”
The Spartans do not just rely on a potent offense to win ball games. DuBois indicates Stafford has a strong defense. They are based out of a 4-2 and sometimes will slide to a 50 front look. Stafford was second to Bay City in team defense in District 12-4A averaging 260 yards allowed per game. “They’ve got a real good defense and so it’s going to be a challenge offensively for us,” DuBois admits.
Two ends are the leaders on the Spartan defense. Kameron Hill and Charles Hester are a matching pair of bookends that can close the book on a team’s offensive game plan. The Stafford secondary is well stocked with talent including its two cornerbacks Myles Baker and David Allison who are physical and can cover the pass well.
Only good teams are left in the playoffs now. Coach DuBois tells what the Cardinals must do to advance to the Region 3 finals next week. Bridge City must control the ball offensively like it has all season. To do that he emphasizes the Cardinals must avoid the rash of penalties that occurred in the game with Bay City. They need a repeat of the solid defense in the second half during both of the last two playoff games when Bridge City has only yielded seven points. “And win the kicking game I think we should be all right Friday night,” concludes DuBois.
Bridge City plays Stafford Friday night in Channelview. The Cardinals and the Spartans will kick off at 7:00 PM in Maddry Stadium.
