West Orange-Stark took care of business Friday night under windy conditions as they defeated the Robinson Rockets 47-14 to move on to the third round of the playoffs.
Both teams traded touchdowns to start the game and it looked like it was going to be shootout. But the Mustang defense kept wearing down the Rockets with big plays and big hits until the Rockets abandoned their spread passing game into running out the clock and getting back on the bus.
Offensively the Mustangs scored on their first three possessions with a seven yard run by Jeremiah Shaw and a six yard run by KJ Miller. Their third score, in the first quarter, was a 39 yd pass from Jack Dallas to Keion Hancock on the first play from scrimmage after Hancock intercepted a Rocket pass from Chase Allison.
WOS would add another touchdown in the second quarter on a pass from Dallas to Rufus Joseph for seven yards to take a 27-7 lead at the half.
The Rockets got the ball in the second half and drove to the Mustangs 39 before failing on a fourth and six.
The Mustangs put in Hancock as the “Wildcat” QB on first down and he took it to the house, 61 yards for a TD and a 34-7 lead with 10:06 left in the third and the game was in hand.
Robinson put together a crazy 22 play drive that took 9 minutes or basically the rest of the third quarter, scoring on a short pass to Braxton Ashcraft to make the score 34-14.
The Mustangs would respond with a four play drive, highlighted by a 44 yd pass from Miller to Joseph, that set up a short touchdown by Mandel King.
Kavyn Cooper would finish the scoring for WOS with an 8 yd run with 4:28 left to complete the 33 point win.
The Rockets were held to 368 yds of offense after coming in averaging almost 600 through their first 11 games. The Mustangs “O” put up 494 yds. with 311 coming on the ground. Shaw finished with 15 carries for 117 yds and QB Jack Dallas completed 5 of 10 passes for 139 yds and two touchdowns.
WOS will play the winner of Bellville/Salado on Friday in Porter.
