
Deweyville area voters will choose new school board members and a Precinct 4 Newton County commissioner during elections on Tuesday. In addition, the county has contested races for county judge and sheriff.
In the Deweyville ISD trustee election, 55 ballots were cast early. Four at-large positions are open with a total of seven candidates. Incumbents Sandra Blakeney, Rodney Whitfield and Gary Brinson are seeking re-election. Also running are Bob ‘Lil Bob’ Buxton, Luke Smith and Julie LaVernge. Velvet Maloy registered as a write-in candidate.
The Newton County Precinct 4 commissioner’s race has three write-in candidates for the position. They are William Hamilton, Keina McDaniel and Wesley ‘Gene’ Thompson.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Boxes in the Deweyville area include Deweyville Senior Citizens Building for Box 11, Hartburg Community Building for Box 13, and the T&D Feed Store on Highway 62 in Gist for Box 21.
Newton County has contested countywide races for county judge and sheriff. Democrat Leanord Powell is running against Republican Paul Price for county judge. Kenneth Weeks is a registered write-in candidate for county judge.
Billy Rowles, former Jasper County sheriff and a former Texas Department of Public Safety trooper assigned to Orange County, is running as a Republican for sheriff. Democrat Cynthia Hall, who beat the incumbent in the primary race, is running against Rowles.
