Months after ordering a new $425,000 pumper truck for the Orange Fire Department, the city will be ordering a second one. The Orange City Council has approved the order. The bill will not be due until February.
The two new pumpers will be replacing two 1993 models. Fire Chief David Frenzel said new order has been made for the 2,000 gallon per minute pumper on a Ferrara chassis. The company will loan a pumper to the city while the new one is on order. The city is currently using a loaner model for the new truck that was ordered earlier this year. Frenzel said renting a pumper would cost $75,000 a year.
The city is buying the trucks through the Houston-Galveston Area Council cooperative bidding program.
Frenzel said one of the 1993 pumpers was placed on the Rene Bates Auction site for a $5,000 minimum bid. No bids have been made.
The 23-year-old trucks have been used longer than previous trucks. Frenzel said the fire department has averaged replacing trucks after about 18 years.
The newest pumper will be paid through the city’s general budget. For the first ordered pumper, the city is using $375,000 received through a lawsuit settlement for lost sales taxes and income during the 2010 British Petroleum oil spill.
