A new low rent housing complex is about two months away from opening in West Orange. Whispering Oaks located on Memphis Street at Western Avenue is being constructed by Icon Builders.
Construction Supervisor Tom Riggs said the complex will include 70 apartment units housed in five buildings with an additional clubhouse building. Riggs indicated over half the complex should be open and ready for occupying by the end of this year. He added that the other two buildings will probably be completed in early 2017.
The West Orange City Council gave approval for the low rent housing complex earlier this year. The lone dissenting vote at that time was Alderman Dale Dardeau. In the meantime Dardeau has not changed his stance of opposing the complex which increases the number of low rent housing from 20 to 70 units at that location. He has stated you do not build or improve a city with more low rent housing. Dardeau is hopeful the new Whispering Oaks will be different than what has been the experience in the past with low rent housing.
