
Voters in the Deweyville area will have to write-in someone for the Newton County Precinct 4 race. The Newton County Clerk’s Office reports three candidates have filed as write-in for the spot. They are William Hamilton, Keina McDaniel and Wesley ‘Gene’ Thompson.
Early voting started Monday for the November 8 general election. In Deweyville, early voting will be held Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Senior Citizens Building on Highway 87.
Early voting at the county clerk’s office in Newton will run through this Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and again October 31 through November 4 for the same hours.
Totals from the first day of early voting were not available Tuesday afternoon.
Contested Newton County races have Democrat Leanord Powell running against Republican Paul Price and write-in candidate Kenneth Weeks for county judge.
Former Jasper County sheriff Billy Rowles is the Republican candidate for Newton County Sheriff and is facing Democrat Cynthia Hall, who beat the incumbent during the primary race.
For Precinct 3 county commissioner, Democratic incumbent Prentiss Hopson is being challenged by Gary ‘Tick’ Fomby. The Precinct 3 constable race has Democrat Bradley Smith and Republican Bubba Johnson.
