Two straight open weeks have the Bridge City Cardinals ready to get back on the football field and to start hitting guys in a different colored jersey. Coach Dwayne DuBois indicates the two weeks helped heal some bumps and bruises so the Cardinals will be healthy coming into district action this week. The two weeks were used to correct some holes in the Bridge City offense and defense. DuBois says the coaches went back to basics, corrected some mistakes that were being made, and moved some personnel around.
The district begins this Friday, and the opening opponent is Cleveland which is much improved over last season. DuBois believes the Indians are very good on offense. They are led by the coach’s son their quarterback Jett Hendrix. He missed most of last season with an injury, but DuBois believes Hendrix is fully recovered and is very elusive when he runs the football.
Cleveland operates out of the Spread with Hendrix. The Indians prefer to run the ball out of the Spread with counters and quarterback keeps. Dylan Reeves is also a quality runner for the Indians. They will throw the ball out of the Spread, so DuBois admits the Cardinals have got their work cut out for them.
Because of the Bridge City run oriented offense Coach DuBois anticipates the Cleveland defense may shift from its normal formation. The Indians run multiple fronts. Sometimes they lineup in a 4-3 look, sometimes out of an odd man front with a 50 look, and other times they use a Stacked look. Last year against the Cardinals Cleveland used a 6-2 look.
DuBois is impressed with the two big Cleveland defensive ends Kobe Gibson and David Reeves. Linebackers Marcus Smith and Limon Joel are both very solid. The coach expects a clean, competitive ball game from the Indians.
The district opener is also homecoming for Bridge City. With a lot on the line DuBois tells what is needed from the Cardinals to earn a victory against the Indians. Avoiding turnovers will be a huge key for the Cardinals who have suffered numerous giveaways in the last two games, both losses. The team that dictates the tempo in the game Coach DuBois believes will be the one to come out on top Friday night.
Friday night the Bridge City Cardinals entertain the Cleveland Indians for homecoming. KOGT will broadcast the game live beginning at 7:00 PM. The game will be re-broadcast at 7:00 AM on Saturday.
