The open week came at a good time for the Deweyville Pirates at about the mid-point of the season. Coach Lance Dale says the bye week allowed the Pirates to heal. Dale believes Deweyville is in good shape at this point of the season.
Coming off the bye Deweyville starts district competition this week against the Groveton Indians. Dale indicates the Indians have a very potent offense with quarterback Glenn Thornton at the helm. Dale points out Thornton threw for over 4100 yards last season. He has two primary receivers in Saul Chavez and Dawson Chumley who get 95 percent of his passes. They are a great passing team and a high scoring offense Dale concedes.
On defense the Indians are lead by their middle linebacker Trey Hance according to Coach Dale. The Indians are based out of a 4-3 Defense and make normal adjustments from that formation. Dale states the Pirates must block Hance since he is their best defensive player.
Deweyville wants to start district with a win, and Dale shares what the Pirates need to do get a victory against Groveton on Friday night. The pressure is going to be on the Deweyville secondary which must be aware of their assignments while covering Chavez and Chumley. Dale emphasized, “We have to control the football, control the line of scrimmage, keep their big play offensive off the field as much as possible, and score when we have the ball.”
The Deweyville Pirates kick off the district with the Groveton Indians on Friday night in Deweyville. The game starts at 7:00 PM.
