Pirates running back Hogan Stogner (20) breaks through the Ozen defense for a 12-yard gain in the first quarter to help propel Vidor to an early lead and eventual 42-7 victory over the Ozen Panthers on Friday night.
Pirates pummel Panthers, 42-7
It’s déjà vu in Pirateland as Vidor is riding a three-game winning streak and there is a Quirante at quarterback.
The Vidor Pirates used its stable of running backs to churn out the yards and score plenty of points in a 42-7 victory over the Ozen Panthers on Friday night at Pirates Stadium.
Vidor (3-1, 2-0) had 416 total yards in Friday’s win over Ozen, and all of it came on the ground. Oddly enough not a single Vidor rusher went over 100 yards on the night.
The Pirates took the opening kickoff and marched 77 yards in 13 plays, while chewing up 6:32 off the clock, before running back Hogan Stogner scored on a 10 yard run around the left side for a 7-0 Pirates lead. Stogner (17 rushes, 89 yards) finished the night with three touchdowns.
Ozen responded with what proved to be its best drive of the night as the team marched from its 24 yard line to midfield. A roughing the kicker penalty gave the Panthers new life and moved the ball to the Pirates 35 yard line, but Ozen could not capitalize on the momentum and turned the ball over on downs following an incompletion on fourth and 11.
Pirates quarterback Maverick Quirante guided the Pirates downfield on another long drive, this time covering 68 yards in 10 plays while consuming another 5:30 off the clock as Kolbie Humble zipped in from 14 yards. Humble led all rushers with 99 yards on 9 carries.
The Pirates defense was aggressive much of the night as Vidor kept Ozen quarterback Morris Dominique under pressure and on the run all night. Vidor held Dominique and the Ozen offense to 89 total yards, while recovering a fumble in the third quarter and an interception by Gavin Otey in the fourth stopped Ozen’s final drive.
Vidor (3-1, 2-0) is riding a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2012, the last time the Pirates reached the playoffs, and is looking to keep that momentum flowing as Vidor travels to Nederland to face the Bulldogs next Friday. Nederland (2-2, 2-0) defeated Baytown Lee, 48-7, on Friday night.
Ozen (1-2, 1-1) will host the Port Arthur Memorial Titans (2-0, 1-0) next Friday.
