Last week was one the Bridge City Cardinals would like to put behind them. The Cardinals took it on the chin from top ranked West Orange-Stark and an ugly incident involving two of the players was made public prior to the game. Coach Dwayne DuBois says both players will face consequences for their actions, but the coach is not at liberty to disclose what their penalties will be at this time.
Transitioning into this week Bridge City has another tough nut to crack with the state ranked Newton Eagles. DuBois believes there are plenty of good reasons why the Eagles are highly ranked. Quarterback Brock Barbay is their go to guy on offense. Barbay is not the only threat in the Newton backfield. The Eagles use different running backs all of whom are quick and shifty. They deploy in multiple formations including everything from the Spread to double tight end with two wings. DuBois states the Eagles are very explosive offensively.
Newton’s defense compares favorably to that of West Orange-Stark’s according to Coach DuBois. They call it the Eagle Diamond, but the Newton defense is also multiple and will shift from an odd man front to an even front. The Eagle linebackers are very active, their secondary is very athletic, and the defensive line is not composed of the biggest kids, but DuBois comments they run to the ball extremely well like the Mustangs do on defense.
The Cardinals will have their work cut out for them Coach DuBois believes when they travel to Newton on Friday. DuBois emphasizes cutting down on turnovers and doing a much better job on specialty teams than the Cardinals did against West Orange-Stark. Bridge City will have to control the clock with its offense. The coach sums up that the coaches and players need a good week of practice which was to start on Monday afternoon.
The Bridge City Cardinals play at Newton on Friday night with the kickoff at 7:30. Friday’s game may be the last one for Bridge City until the first week of October because of a bye week and Brock High School dropped out as an opponent just prior to the start of the season.
