The Deweyville Pirates are looking to turn things around with a winning attitude after being put in a lower classification this year. Coach Lance Dale believes the scrimmages have prepared the Pirates to begin the season. Dale states Deweyville scrimmaged two schools in a higher classification to be ready when the games are for real.
The real games start Friday for Deweyville with Colmesneil. Dale says the Bulldogs run the Slot-T. They are basically a run oriented offense, but will throw the football out of play action. The Bulldogs’ quarterback does a good job directing the offense and carrying out his fakes according to Coach Dale. Their running backs are pretty good.
The Colmesneil Slot-T employs a lot of misdirection. The Pirates need to key the Bulldogs’ guards. Dale emphasizes the Pirates do their assignments on defense and not get caught up in all the misdirection. He adds Deweyville cannot get fooled when the Bulldogs do throw the ball.
Coach Dale analyzes Colmesneil’s 50 Defense. Their defensive line is pretty big with some size up front in the noseguard and two tackles. The Bulldogs like to send their defensive ends on stunts and put pressure on the ball. Dale observes that Colmesneil’s linebacker can make things happen.
Going into this first game Dale is encouraging the Pirates to “DYJ”, Do Your Job! Coach Dale is looking for his players to carry out their assignments and do what they are supposed to do. He wants Deweyville to do a better job of tackling and expects better play out of the Pirates’ defensive ends.
The coach challenged his defense going into the season opener. Dale urged his defensive players to step up, do their job, and go out there and set the tone for the season on defense. Coach Dale exclaimed, “I really want to do that!”
The Deweyville Pirates hope to take care of business Friday night at home against the Colmesneil Bulldogs. The kickoff is at 7:30 PM.
