The Bridge City Cardinals made the playoffs last season in the first year with Dwayne DuBois as head coach. DuBois was happy with his first year as the Cardinals’ coach, but not satisfied.
The foundation returns as every Bridge City offensive lineman is back for Coach DuBois from last year’s squad. Joseph Adams, Chase Boneau, Nick Menard, and Zayne Trahan are all three-year starters. The coach as a result is expecting the Cardinal line to be one of the best in the district and adds they are working very hard to meet his expectations.
Also returning are two good running backs. Cayce Draper at fullback and Pat Morris at halfback both had solid years for the Cardinals. DuBois believes he has two strong candidates for tailback in Hunter Denton and Max Baker, crediting both as being real quick, fast, and explosive kids. Quarterback is a position DuBois must fill with the graduation of his son Camden. Byron Trahan looks to be the heir apparent to run the Cardinals’ offense.
Coach DuBois believes Bridge City will be better on defense with a number of returning lettermen. Seth Green and Stetson Wilson return in the defensive line. The Cardinals’ secondary is loaded with experience. Zach Honeycutt is a three-year starter as is Hunter Denton. At safety is Justyn Romero who will be starting for his second year in a row.
There are some young Birds in the nest that DuBois thinks will get some playing time this season. Ethan Hamm and Blake Deshara played a lot on the junior varsity last year, and DuBois expects big things from them. Brady Coulter was also on the JV last season and is moving up to varsity. Caleb Honeycutt is another explosive player who is being counted on to step up.
The coach is expecting a better season in his second year at Bridge City, but DuBois admits it will not be easy. He points out the district is one of the toughest in the state. DuBois wants to make the playoffs, but not be just one and done. “I feel like we’re one of the best teams in the district, but we’re going to have to go out and play each and every week. There’s not a week off in this district, it’s going to be a dogfight,” Coach DuBois concludes.
The season opens for Bridge City on August 26 at Hamshire-Fannett. Coach DuBois is trying to fill a spot in Week 6 that became open when Brock High School dropped out. Right now the Cardinals have two weeks without a game in the middle of the schedule before they start district action against Cleveland on October 7.
