
Storing live worms in a reach-in cooler above drinks will earn demerits from Orange County Health Inspector James Scales. The IB Cheapers store on Highway 12 in Mauriceville had that problem during the first part of August. Scales went to 26 food businesses and restaurants and gave eight perfect scores. The lowest rating was an 85 for the Vidor Waffle House.
The perfect scores went to Hamburger Depot on Texas Avenue in Bridge City, Hampton Inn in Orange, Fastlane on North Main Street in Vidor, El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant on 16th Street in Orange, Shiver Shack on Highway 87 North in Orange, James Brown Gumbo House on North Main Street in Vidor, First Presbyterian Day Care in Orange, and Wendy’s on Highway 62 in McLewis.
Scales also made two inspections with no scores. One was a pre-opening inspection for Sweet Life Ice Cream Parlor, 1601 16th Street in Orange, and one was a new owner inspection at New York Pizza and Pasta on Interstate 10 in Vidor.

Cakes Plus, 7677 Lamurel Willey Road in Mauriceville: 99. Floors and storage shelves needed to be cleaned.
Comfort Inn, 2321 Highway 62 South in Orange: 98. Paper towels were needed at the hand-washing station.
Best Western Inn, 2245 Highway 62 in Orange: 97. Hotel did not have sanitizer solution for dishes and food contact surfaces.
Whataburger, 2300 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 97. Drive-through drink station had a water leak at the bottom of the machine. Several gnats were found.
Dollar General, 385 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Inspector found lots of spider webs inside the storage room and on the sales floor. Inside of the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors needed to be cleaned. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and reorganized.
Flying J Travel Plaza, 7112 Interstate 10 West in Orange: 96. Dates were needed on products. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and on the sales floor. Damaged ceiling tiles were found. Floors needed to be cleaned. Outside wall needed to be repaired.
Tico’s Cuban Cafe, 1145 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. The reach-in freezer was not closing properly and needed to be repaired or replaced. Restaurant did not have a three-compartment sink. Inspector reported the sinks were removed and a commercial dishwasher was added in their place; however a three-compartment sink is still required. Floor tiles were missing. Ceiling tiles were damaged.
Danny’s Super Foods, 2003 Western Avenue in West Orange: 94. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Damaged ceiling tiles were found.
Danny’s Super Foods Deli, 2003 Western Avenue in West Orange: 93. The inside of the ice machine needed to be cleaned. The inside of the three-compartment sink needed to be resealed. Area around the fryers and flat-top grill needed to be cleaned. Outside of storage containers and floors needed to be cleaned. Walls around the three-compartment sink needed to be cleaned and repaired.
105 A-1 Smoke Shop, 5320 North Main Street in Vidor: 92. Ice scoop was on top of the ice machine. Dates were not on sandwiches inside the reach-in cooler. Inspector found lots of dead bugs throughout the store. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Lights needed to be replaced inside the back storage room.
Donut Nation, 18394 Highway 62 South in Orange: 91. Eggs, sausage and boudain were not at proper temperatures. Store did not keep a record of times for holding eggs, sausage and boudain at room temperatures. Raw dough was stored inside plastic grocery bags. Same pan liner was being used to bake kolaches.
Snow Flake Donuts, 1402 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 90. Inspector found boudain, sausage and eggs at improper temperatures. Store did not keep records of times on holding the boudain, sausage and egg products at room temperature. Cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inside of ice machine needed to be cleaned. Several ceiling tiles were damaged and needed to be repaired.
Raceway, 500 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 90. Chicken sandwiches were at unsafe temperatures. Inspector reported employee immediately pulled the product. Employee drinks were stored inside the ice machine. Inspector said ice needed to be disposed and the machine cleaned and sanitized. Mold was inside the ice machine and on drink dispensers. Dust was on several air vents. Inspector recommended cleaning them more often.
IB Cheapers, 11365 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 89. Store was keeping containers of live worms above drinks inside the reach-in cooler. Ice scoop was on top of the box next to the ice machine. The table top at the drink station was starting to come apart and needed to be repaired or replaced. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and sales floor. Light shields were needed. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing.
Star Stop, 1402 16th Street in Orange: 86. Inspector pulled several foods from shelves. Cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods. Employee restroom did not have hot water. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Floor tiles near ice machine needed to be repaired.
Waffle House, 125 East Freeway in Vidor: 85. Ham was not at proper temperature. Old brown lettuce was inside the reach-in cooler. Slight mold was on drink dispensers. Inspector pulled several dishes that had been cleaned but still had old foods stuck on them. Reach-in cooler had a “homemade” door made from a piece of insulation and duct tape. The front cooler was not keeping a proper temperature. Several flies were found. Employee drinks did not have lids and straws. Inside of coolers needed to be cleaned. Water was dripping from ceiling tiles and air vents. Inspector closed two stations until the dripping water problems were repaired.
