Prospects of the postseason for the Deweyville Pirates got a lot brighter with realignment earlier this year. The Pirates were lowered in classification and are now in Class 2A, Division I. Coach Lance Dale believes Deweyville will be more competitive playing schools closer to its size and with the same amount of depth as the Pirates. Dale adds, “That’s really going to help us not just in football, but in all of our athletic programs.”
Coach Dale provides the names of players back on offense for Deweyville this season. Caden Hubbard returns as the Pirates’ quarterback and Jeramiah Trevino returns as wingback. In the offensive line Deweyville has returning lettermen with tight end Levi Perkins, tackle Hunter Maloy, and guard Bobby Fox. Back at wide receiver is Caleb Winkle.
Seven lettermen are back for the Pirates and Coach Dale on the defensive side of the football. Anchoring the defensive line is Darin Lavergne at noseguard. Also returning to the Deweyville defensive line are tackle Bobby Fox, ends Levi Perkins and Rodney Richardson. The Pirates have Nate Dickerson and Caleb Winkle back in the secondary.
There are also young Pirates coming up to the varsity according to Dale. Jace Atchley should see playing time at running back and linebacker. Nathan Hughes and Nathan Henson are tabbed by Coach Dale to play in the offensive line at guard and center respectfully. Justin Lilyquist and John Hughes will get the opportunity to play on both sides of the football.
A lower classification and a new district have Coach Dale looking to the postseason for Deweyville this season. “I expect us to have a winning record, and I expect us to make the playoffs. My main goal is to let our pre-district schedule get us better for district, and I want the Pirates to be in the postseason, make the playoffs this year,” Dale predicts.
The season opens August 26 for the Deweyville Pirates at home against Colmesneil.
