An off-duty sheriff’s deputy Monday stopped three teenage boys, two with pistols that turned out to be BB guns, from robbing a 13-year-old. The attempted robbery happened about 5:10 p.m. in the 1400 block of Green Avenue in downtown.
Cliff Hargrave, who is retired from the Orange Police Department and is now working for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, caught the three robbers near his business.
OPD Detective Captain Robert Enmon said Hargrave had the boys on the ground at gunpoint after seeing one of the boys with a gun.
Hargrave Tuesday described the pistol as “a very realistic looking BB gun.” The other boy then pulled out a gun and said “It’s a BB gun.”
Hargrave owns and operates Team Cliffjitsu on Green Avenue. He had gotten off work and driven to the business. He said he saw a kid pushing a bicycle and three boys following the kid and cursing at him. After hearing a boy demand the kid give them the bike, Hargrave said he went outside to run the other boys off. He wasn’t expecting guns.
“As I walked up, one pulled a pistol,” Hargrave said.
When he had all four boys on the ground, one of his students drove up and he had them call 911. “It all happened very, very quickly,” Hargrave said.
Captain Enmon said a 15-year-old and two 16-year-old boys were arrested for aggravated robbery.
