The Little Cypress-Mauriceville School District is losing a key player in its cast of educators. Cory Broom the very successful drama instructor for LC-M High School is moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area to take a teaching position there.
A graduate of West Orange-Stark High School Broom got his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas State University in 2010 before taking over the drama program at LC-M six years ago.
Broom said he has had the great pleasure of working with hundreds of wonderful students that have passed through his drama department. Broom is proud of the success the LC-M Drama Department has had while he has been there and is especially pleased with the fourth place finish in the state finals in 2015. “That is something that hadn’t been done in Orange County in 20 years, so for us to be able to get to that spot and bring a lot of recognition not only to LC-M and to Orange, but to southeast Texas was really a great accomplishment for me and the students,” Broom recalled.
The drama bug first bit Cory when he was young at First Presbyterian Church in Orange while performing in the musicals of then Choir Director Marcia Perrine. He went on to perform in 20 to 30 productions with Orange Community Players and served on their board of directors.
Broom is excited about the new position, but sad about leaving Orange. Broom has accepted a position in the Lewisville School District at Hebron High School which is a big school with 3800 students in grades 9 through 12. He will be one of four theater teachers at the school. “It’s definitely going to be different, but that’s where I’m headed and still to direct theater,” Broom informs.
Broom admits that with the D-FW area having so many strong community theater programs his passion for theater will keep him busy on the stage as well. He still has family in Orange so he will be back for visits.
