
Slime, flies and roach feces were among the problems Orange County Health Inspector James Scales found in June. Four of the 23 food businesses scored in the mid-80s for health inspection violations while six made perfect scores. Scales went to 23 businesses and institutions during the last part of June.
Perfect scores went to the Vidor High School and Vidor Junior High cafeterias serving the summer feeding program. The West Orange-Stark High School cafeteria also made a 100. Others were the Panthers Den Preschool in Mauriceville, Bright Beginnings Learning in Vidor, and Laquinta Inn and Suites in Orange.
Scales made a pre-opening inspection with no score for the Driver and Hans Lunch at 807 Simmons Drive in Orange.
The lowest score was an 83 to the Pakco on Highway 12 in Vidor. Others with mid-80 scores were Homemade Donuts in Orangefield, Hushpuppy’s Seafood in Vidor, and Kwik Stop Valero in Vidor.

Oza’s Diner, 1907-B MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 99. The outside back storage area and floors inside the mobile truck needed to be cleaned more often.
The Snack Shack, 2822 Western Avenue in West Orange: 99. Inspector found several gnats.
Charlotte’s Shaved Ice, 110 South Main Street in Vidor: 99: Hair restraints were needed.
Ice Castle Concessions, 1350 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Faucet needed to be repaired because water was coming out of the base.
Showbiz Cinema, 3330 Bowling Lane in Orange: 97. Faucet needed to be repaired and a toilet inside the men’s restroom needed to be repaired.
Chicken Express, 2250 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Inspector found several flies. The bottom of the back door needed to be resealed. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Dust was on walls inside the dining room. A damaged gasket was on the reach-in cooler door and needed to be repaired.
Cardinal Snow Cone Stand, 215 Hebert Street in Bridge City: 96. A faucet was dripping water from the base and needed to be repaired. Floors were sticky and needed to be cleaned more often.
Market Basket Deli, 800 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Food was stored on floor and needed to be six inches off the floor. Utensils were stored handle down. Storage racks, the outside of equipment and the inside of the reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors throughout the deli needed to be cleaned of foods and dirt. Floor tiles were missing or damaged. Inspector recommended “lots of daily general cleaning.”
Sonic Drive in, 340 North Main Street in Vidor: 95. Foods inside the reach-in coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Lights were needed inside the walk-in freezer. Floors throughout restaurant needed to be cleaned. Standing water was found on floors.
Mauriceville Fuel Stop, 11845 Highway 62 in Mauriceville: 94. Heavy mold was inside the ice machine. Inspector said weekly cleaning is required. Store did not have hot water inside restrooms. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and sales floor. Items should be six inches off the floor. Air registered 84 degrees and system needed repairs.
Panthers Den at the Mauriceville Fuel Stop, 11845 Highway 62 in Mauriceville: o94. The hand-washing sink had a slow drain. The three-compartment sink had water spilling in the next sink and both needed to be repaired. Store did not have a certified food manager on staff. The back door needed to be resealed. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Air returns needed to be cleaned and paint was chipping off. Air temperature was 84 degrees and system needed repairs.
Burger King, 605 North Main Street in Vidor: 88. Water from the motor inside the walk-in freezer was dripping onto boxes of fries. Mold was on all drink stations. The ice cream machine had a constant drip of cream and needed repairing. Inspector found several flies. Vent-a-Hood, garbage cans inside and outside, plus floors walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector reported “restaurant was found in very poor cleaning condition” and planned on daily visits. Baseboards were coming off the walls in the dining room and several damaged ceiling tiles were found throughout.
Roach feces were in the back storage area and on shelves at the sales floor. Sinks drain into each other at the base and needed to be repaired. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Floors and shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector recommended more cleaning.
Hushpuppy’s Seafood, 1202 North Main Street in Vidor: 86. Flies were found on raw fish. Bugs were found inside containers of flour and cornmeal. Inspector found “lots of flies throughout” restaurant. Plumbing at all sinks needed to be repaired. Dates were needed on all products. Frozen fish were thawing inside a sink. The Vent-a-Hood, fryers and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned of old grease. Light shields were needed. Old equipment and materials were being stored outside the back door and needed to be repaired or discarded. Floors, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old grease. Restaurant had damaged ceiling tiles.
Kwik Stop Valero, 2210 South Main Street in Vidor: 85. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Slime was inside the ice machine. Hot water was only 99.8 degrees instead of the required 118 degrees. Inspector closed deli section until it was repaired. Paper towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Water from one of the three-compartment sink sections draining into each other. Roach feces were in the back storage area and on shelves at the sales floor. Sinks drain into each other at the base and needed to be repaired. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Floors and shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector recommended more cleaning.
Homemade Donuts, 6377 FM 1442 in Orangefield: 84. Sausage, ham and boudain were not at proper temperatures. Store did not have a record of the time the sausage, ham and boudain were held at room temperature. Hot water needed to be repaired because it was about 10 degrees off the required temperature. Dates were needed on all products. Grocery bags were used for raw dough storage. Pan lines were being used multiple times to bake kolaches. Vent-a-Hood, floors and the employee restroom needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt. The restroom toilet seat was broken and needed to be repaired. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
Pakco, 3031 Highway 12 in Vidor: 83. Inspector found several expired foods from 2015 and 2016. Cappuccino machine and dispensers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on products. Soap and towels were needed at the hand sinks. Drinks were stored on the floor. The Vent-a-Hood, cooking equipment, floors and walls throughout store needed to be cleaned of old foods. Light shield was needed. The outside dumpster area needed to be cleaned of old trash. Damaged and missing ceiling tiles were throughout the store. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
