It has been roughly two months since the flooding of the Sabine River in Orange and Newton Counties. Ray Perez with FEMA has been working to register citizens for disaster assistance during the last seven weeks.
Perez said citizens have one more week to register with FEMA for this disaster. Registration for the disaster assistance closes on Wednesday, May 18. Perez stated that FEMA still has one Disaster Recovery Center open at the Newton County Senior Center on Highway 87 just south of Highway 12. The center is open Monday through Saturday for people to register or to check on their case with FEMA. Perez believes most people in Orange and Newton Counties have registered which were the heaviest hit of the eight counties up and down in East Texas affected by the floods.
Persons wanting to register with FEMA can go in person to the Disaster Recovery Center in Deweyville. They can also call 1-800-621-3362, or go online to disasterassistance.com to register.
Over the next week or two Perez informs that FEMA will be getting some manufactured housing shipped to Southeast Texas. He reminds that these mobile homes are a last resort for people who have no other recourse because of the damage to their residence. The manufactured housing will give those citizens that need them a place to live while there is construction being done on their damaged homes.
FEMA will interview citizens who might have the need for this type of unit. Perez admits it will be a slow process since FEMA has to work with the local officials and zoning laws as well as insuring the manufactured housing units will be in a safe location that will not get flooded again.
