The Bridge City Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the seventh and hung on to win game one of its best of three series 7-4 with the Liberty Panthers Friday night at Panther Field. Game 2 will be in Bridge City as will a third game if necessary on Saturday.
Tanner Doiron delivered the key hit in the seventh inning with a double to the left field fence to drive home Schuyler Thibodaux and Tod McDowell. Doiron scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch. Chaston Miller got a pinch hit bunt and later scored on a three-base error by the Panthers to make the score 7-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
Liberty rallied in the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs using two hit batters to start the inning. Trevor Pierce hit his second double of the game to bring home one run. Hunter Anderson singled to plate Pierce. Bridge City’s third pitcher Kevin Gordon recorded a strike out and got a ground out to close out the game.
Tod McDowell was the starting pitcher for the Cardinals and went into the fifth before walking the first two Panther batters. Kyle Bergeron relieved and got out of the inning unscathed when Caleb Dubois made a sliding catch of a fly ball in right field and then threw out a runner trying to advance to third base for a spectacular double play.
The Cardinals took the lead with an unearned run in the third. Bergeron led off with a walk and went to third on a throwing error by Liberty when Thibodaux attempted to sacrifice. McDowell grounded out to second and Bergeron came home with the first run.
Bridge City upped the lead to 3-0 when the Cardinals got three straight hits after two were out. Thibodaux and McDowell both went to right field for singles. Courtesy runner Evan Champagne stole second base to put Cardinals at second and third. Doiron drove them both home with a ground ball up the middle into center field for a two out, two-run single.
Game 2 of the series will be at 2:00 Saturday afternoon at Bridge City. A third game if necessary would follow.
BC Lady Cards lost to Caldwell 3-2 in 8 innings Friday in Livingston. Kassidy Wilbur struck out 11 but the Lady Cards had their troubles hitting the ball as well as they finished with only 5 hits. One was a 2 run homer by Peyton Trapp. Games 2 and 3 will be Saturday in Livingston.
