Bidding was fierce Wednesday evening for a black-and-white photograph of a landmark Orange live oak tree. The work by West Orange-Stark High student Roxy Martinez entitled “Dancing Oak,” sold for $235. The money is going to charity.
Student photographers at WO-S raised $2,285 for four local groups by selling their artwork. Under teacher Lacey Hale, the students went on a field trip around town with cameras and imagination. Their works were printed and mounted or framed for sale. Local businesses Infocus and Pinehurst Gallery helped with the project.
A grant from the West Orange-Cove Education Foundation paid for the project.
The students had an art show complete with refreshments and an auction at The Garden District. Some of the photographs were sold straight from the display. Others were auctioned by auctioneer Ricky Deville. “Dancing Oak” brought the biggest price.
The students participating were Da’Jana Adams, Elecia Barlow, Kenan Booker, Kenya Bragg, Deja Harrison, Justin Istre, Paul Ivory, Demaric Judge, Ki’Vohna Linton, Roxy Martinez, Guadalupe Ortiz, Majesty Papilon, Princess Ponce, Gabriela Rico and Dalton Weldon.
They decided to donate the proceeds raised through the sale to the Friends of the Orange Depot, Orange Lions Club, Orange Rotary Club and Orange County United Way.
