
Once again, Orange County Health Inspector James Scales was handing out A’s and B’s for scores. During the first two weeks of April, he went to 23 businesses or institutions dealing with food and handed out three perfect scores, including one to the Orange County Jail. The lowest score was an 83 and went to Wienerschnitzel on MacArthur Drive with violations including hot dogs at unsafe temperatures.
Besides the jail, the perfect scores went to the Flava-Foods at Lamar State College-Orange Student Center and CVS on Texas Avenue in Bridge City.
Scales also made four pre-opening inspections for The Stuffed Mushroom Kitchen, 1922-B Strickland Drive in Pinehurst, the Sabine River Festival and Crawfish Festival. He also made a pre-opening visit to the Stop and Shop, 111 Green Avenue, which had to make repairs from damages caused by the March Sabine River flooding.

Walgreen’s, 1408 16th Street in Orange: 99. Floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of trash.
Moz Grill/Crawdads, 4080 Interstate 10 in Orange: 99. The Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods in the back storage area. Light shields needed to be replaced.
Dollar Tree, 2013 Texas Avenue in Bridge city: 97. Several dented cans were on shelves.
Crawdads, 4080 Interstate 10 in Orange: 96. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Food products needed to be stored six inches off the floor inside the walk-in cooler and back storage area.
Family Dollar, 1301 N. 16th Street in Orange: 96. Inspector pulled three carts full of expired foods from the sales floor. Storage racks inside the milk reach-in cooler had black mold. Inspector recommended cleaning and sanitizing.
Whataburger, 1905 Texas Avenue in Bridge city: 96. Mold was inside the ice machine. A damaged wall inside the kitchen area needed to be repaired.
Shipley Donuts, 2913 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 96. Employee drinks were inside the reach-in cooler/freezer. Buckets of donut fillings and flour were stored on the floor and needed to be raised six inches. The same pan line was used to bake several batches of kolaches. Pan lines should be used once. The Vent-a-Hood, storage shelves and floors under equipment needed to be cleaned. The back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized.
McDonald’s, 763 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Dates were needed on products. The Vent-a-Hood, area around fryers, fryers, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old grease and foods. More general cleaning was needed.
Sonic Drive-In, 2805 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 95. Chicken strips were stored on top of a container lid out in the open without covering. Vent-a-Hood at fryers and the flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old grease. Portion of the wall in the back storage area needed repaired. Baseboards in the back storage area were missing. Back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Unused and broken equipment needed to be discarded.
LaCantina Mexican Grill, 2709 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 94. Raw meats were stored above raw vegetables inside the reach-in freezer. Storage shelves were rusted inside coolers. Ceiling tiles were damaged near dishwashing station. Floor tiles were broken and needed to be replaced. Some floor grout was missing. Inspector reported the restaurant improved on food safety practices and cleaning.
Romano’s 8.31 Italian, 995 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 92. All ice scoops were stored incorrectly. The faucet at the three-compartment sink was dripping water from the base. Dates were needed on products inside the reach-in cooler/freezers. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be repaired.
HEB Pantry, 2424 16th Street in Orange: 91. Raw vegetable cooler needed to be cleaned more often. Hand-washing station inside the produce storage area was leaking water in the back. Reach-in freezers on sales floor had lots of ice forming on the outside of the food packages and needed to be repaired. Inside of all walk-in coolers in the back storage area needed to be cleaned of dirt and trash. Storage shelves at milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods.
7-Eleven, 527 South Highway 87 in Orange: 91. Mold and slime were inside both ice machines. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Walk-in cooler door had a torn gasket. Storage shelves inside the walk-in cooler were beginning to rust and needed to be cleaned. Floors throughout store needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Jack-in-the-Box, 1315 North Main Street in Vidor: 87. Paper towels for hand-washing station were sitting on shelves and not in the dispenser. Several broken or damaged food containers were inside the reach-in coolers and freezers. Employees were wearing improper jewelry. Vent-a-Hoods, storage racks and toasters needed to be cleaned of old foods. All areas of floors, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Inspector recommended more general cleaning and a daily cleaning schedule.
Wienerschnitzel, 2420 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 83. Hot dogs were at unsafe temperatures. Ice scoop was lying on top of ice. Faucet needed repairs. Dates needed on all products. Vents were missing above fryers. Air vents falling down and needed repair. Front cooler was broken and the food inside was discarded. The air-conditioner was broken. Hair restraints were needed. Employees were wearing improper jewelry. Floor, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt. Lights needed inside the walk-in freezer. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. Floor tiles were broken.
