
Restaurants and food businesses were looking clean in March as Orange County Health Inspector James Scales handed out all A’s and B’s. He went to 22 businesses and gave five perfect scores. The lowest score was an 86.
The perfect scores included two schools, West Orange-Stark High and Bridge City Middle, along with Once Upon a Time Child Care in Bridge City. Walgreen’s in Vidor and Wal-Mart in Vidor also had no violations.
Scales made pre-opening inspections with no scores for Mama Lupe Mexican Grill on Western Avenue in West Orange, Tropicana Ice Cream Parlor on Texas Avenue in Bridge City and Subway on Texas Avenue in Bridge City. In addition, made a pre-opening inspection for the Shell Star Stop on Highway 12 in Mauriceville which has been closed but is opening with a new owner.

Family Dollar, Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 92. Spider webs needed to be removed.
Burger Town, FM 1442 in Orangefield: 98. Employee drinks were found without lids and straws, plus the drinks were sitting on top of the ice machine. Fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Break Time, 3900 North 16th Street in Orange: 96. Restroom did not have hot water. Dead bugs were inside the light shields. Insulation was exposed from ceiling tiles.
Dairy Queen, 321 Strickland Drive in Orange: 96. Hot water nozzle at the service sink was broken. Sides of the fryers needed to be cleaned of grease. The wall and grout at the three-compartment sink needed to be cleaned and re-grouted.
Subway, 3736 North 16th Street in Orange: 96. Ice scoop was on top of the ice machine. Floor tiles under the back hand-washing sink were damaged.
Elements Cafe and Bakery, 1055 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Products needed to be dated. Storage shelves, counter tops and floors, especially under and around equipment, needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Robert’s Meat Market, 3720 West Park Avenue in Pinehurst: 94. Pipes under the three-compartment sink were dripping water. Storage shelves inside the walk-in cooler were rusted. Glass doors on the front of the meat cooler were cracked. Walk-in freezer door was iced over and not closing completely. Floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash.
Market Basket, 800 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. Expired foods were found throughout the store. Employees’ food and drinks were stored improperly inside coolers. Foods were stored on the floor. Light shields needed inside the milk coolers. Floors needed to be cleaned of old foods, dirt and trash. Back storage room needed to be cleaned more often.
Bridge City Food Mart, 1000 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 92. Inspector pulled several out-dated foods off shelves. Door to reach-in freezer was damaged and needed to be repaired. Drinks were stored on the floor. The areas around fryers and flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old foods. Some ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Floors, especially under equipment, needed to be cleaned of trash and dirt. Unused and broken equipment needed to be removed.
Country Pantry, 1079 Orange Street in Vidor: 91. Hot water faucet at the three-compartment since was broken. Sandwiches needed to be dated. Gasket on walk-in cooler door needed to be replaced. Mice feces were on storage shelves. Cappuccino machined needed to be cleaned. Floor tiles were damaged.
Super Stop, 2745 Evangeline Drive in Vidor: 90. Mold was inside the ice machine. Ice scoop was on top of the machine. Store did not have hot water in the restroom or at the three-compartment sink. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Light bulbs needed to be replaced. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Restroom needed to be cleaned more often and had a damaged wall.
Pirates Stop, 1883 North Main Street in Vidor: 89. Ice scoop was on top of machine. Store did not have a certified food manager on staff. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Soap and towels were needed at hand-washing stations. Drinks were stored on the floor. Hood vent needed to be cleaned of old grease. Mop sink was broken.
Kotoyama, 2226 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 86. Vegetables and raw meat were stored incorrectly. Hand-washing sinks did not have hot water. Dates were needed on products. Hand washing sink was not inside the kitchen but was sitting outside the back door. Storage shelves were rusted and some plates were chipped. Food was stored on the floor inside the walk-cooler and freezer. Floors, walls, ceilings and inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust. Inspector recommended more general cleaning and will do weekly follow-up visits.
