The Hardin-Jefferson Hawks scored early and they scored often Tuesday night. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears played long ball, but could not keep pace with the Hawks who took a 13-7 victory at Don Gibbens Field.
Logan McCleod led off the game with a base hit and eventually scored on a two-out single by Nance Marsh to put the Hawks up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Bears replied in the bottom of the first with the first of three homeruns in the game as Drake Trawhon batting leadoff hit a pitch over the right center field fence to tie it up.
LC-M threatened to take the lead as both Vinny Hale and Mitchell Lee followed with singles, but were stranded at second and third to keep the score tied 1-1 after one. The score would remain tied until the third.
In the third the Hawks batted around scoring 6 runs on four hits and were aided by two errors from the Bears. Logan Morreale and McLeod hit back-to-back doubles to start the rally. Greyson Kash had a 2-run single later that was the other highlight of the inning.
Solo runs were added in the fourth and fifth innings as Hardin-Jefferson opened up a 9-1advantage entering the bottom of the fifth. Little Cypress-Mauriceville got singles from Truman Franklin, Trawhon and Hale in the fifth to load the bases for Lee with one out. Lee worked the count full. Hawks’ pitcher Jace Rupert made his 3-2 pitch a little too good, and Lee deposited it over the center field fence for a grand slam cutting the Hawks’ lead to 9-5.
Morreale homered to start the top of the seventh for Hardin-Jefferson. The Hawks would tally two more runs in the inning to make the score 13-5. Grant White hit a homerun over the right field fence scoring Lee in front of him in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 13-7.
With the win Hardin-Jefferson is 3-2 in district. Little Cypress-Mauriceville drops to 1-3 in district action. The Bears play at home again on Friday night against the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. Tuesday night the Mustangs defeated Bridge City to remain undefeated in the district and in first place.
