It was a battle of first place against last place Thursday night at Ronnie Anderson Park. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs prevailed 3-1 over the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns to remain tied for first place in the district.
Payton Robertson got the win on the mound pitching a complete game 3-hitter and striking out eight Longhorns. Robertson had runners reach base each inning except the sixth. He wriggled out of trouble every time but once and that run was unearned.
The Mustangs only got three hits as well. Two of them were by Ryan Ragsdale and both drove in runs. Ragsdale’s two-out double to the center field fence scored K. J. Miller who had walked in the bottom of the first inning to give West Orange-Stark a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns scored their lone run in the fifth to tie the game. Christian Simpson leadoff with a double and went to third on a fly out to center. A walk and hit batter by Robertson loaded the bases with one out. Catcher Chad Dallas attempted to pick Simpson off of third base, but his throw was errant and went down the left field line allowing Simpson to score. Dallas made a great play later when a pitch got by him to the backstop and he hustled to retrieve the ball then made a perfect throw to Robertson covering the plate to tag out a Longhorn attempting to score the go ahead run.
Hamshire-Fannett made a pitching change in the sixth inning relieving Jordan Johnson who had shutdown the Mustangs after surrendering the run in the first. Adam Burgason took over on the mound. Jack Dallas reached base on an error by the shortstop to start the inning. He sped around to third when Burgason made a wild pickoff throw to first base which rolled quite far down the fence in foul territory.
With Dallas at third and nobody out, Hamshire-Fannett was forced to play the infield in to try to cut off the potential winning run. Ragsdale responded with a hard smash in the hole between short and third for his second run batted in of the night. He would later score an insurance run on a wild pitch.
With the win West Orange-Stark sets up next Tuesday’s game with the Cardinals at Bridge City. Both teams come into the game undefeated in district play. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-
