The game did start out as planned, but the end result was a good one for Bridge City. After falling behind 2-0 the Lady Cardinals rallied Friday night and moved to 2-0 in district with an 11-4 victory over the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns in Bridge City.
The Lady Longhorns got a two-out single from Amanda Fountain in the top of the first inning. Callie Saurage followed with a long homerun to left off of Lady Cardinals’ ace pitcher Kassidy Wilbur to give Hamshire-Fannett the early lead in the ball game.
Caitlin Denison started a rally for Bridge City in the bottom of the second with a ground ball single to left. Ashton Sezer laid down a bunt which Saurage at third base in her hurry threw away down the right field line. Denison scored and Sezer went to third on the error. Meagan Sourdellia got the first of her two clutch hits with a single to drive home Sezer, and the game was tied.
With one away Abby Anderson laid down another sacrifice, and again Saurage had trouble with the throw which hit Anderson in the foot. Sourdellia scored on a Baili Thibodaux ground out to give the Lady Cardinals a 3-2 advantage. Anderson made it 4-2 scoring on a wild pitch.
Hamshire-Fannett got a run back in the top of the third. Lady Longhorn pitcher Cassidy Thrash took a Wilbur pitch deep for another homerun over the left center field fence.
Wilbur would return the favor against Thrash in the bottom of the third with a monster blast that cleared the scoreboard in left field and apparently disappeared over a neighbor’s fence beyond the ball field. Successive singles by Denison, Sezer, and Sourdellia scored two more runs for the Lady Cardinals and chased Thrash from the circle making the score 7-3.
Run scoring singles by Anderson and Thibodaux climaxed the 5-run third inning for Bridge City. The Lady Cardinals enjoyed a 9-3 lead after three.
Both teams tallied a run in the fourth inning to keep Bridge City ahead by six runs. Coach Kayla Gallardo made a pitching change to start the fifth inning bringing in Peyton Trapp. She pitched a gem with three shutout innings of relief work. Trapp retired all nine Lady Longhorns she faced with three strikeouts and six ground outs to earn the save.
Bridge City has won its first two games in district and moved to 18-2 on the season with the win. Friday night was Hamshire-Fannett’s opening game of the district. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-
