Commissioners approved advertising for bids on three items during their meeting Tuesday. The first item was on furnishing waste oil and filter recycling service for the county. The purchasing agent Connie Cassidy will also go out for bids on uniform cleaning for the Sheriff’s Office.
Lastly, the Commissioners Court approved advertising for proposals on the National Flood Insurance Program. Missy Pillsbury the Risk Management Coordinator for the county explains the program. Pillsbury said it is a flood program adopted by the Commissioners Court years ago and administered through FEMA. The program affects 31 of the county owned buildings according to Pillsbury.
The Court met in a closed session with County Attorney Doug Manning to discuss pending litigation. No action was taken by the Commissioners in open court after the closed discussions.
March has been proclaimed National Kick Butts Month, as in quit smoking cigarettes. The Commissioners Court Tuesday approved a proclamation recognizing the Julie Rogers Gift of Life for their efforts especially this time of the year and for National Kick Butts Day which is March 16.
Commissioner Jody Crump read from the proclamation. The proclamation told how smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, auto accidents, illegal drugs, homicides, and suicides combined. Thousands more also die from smokeless tobacco use. Further the proclamation stated that tobacco costs the United States more than $150 billion in lost productivity and $170 billion in health care expenditures each year.
Joining the campaign to get the word out of the harmful nature of cigarettes and tobacco products is the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Key Club. Several of the Key Club’s members stood with Connie Berry Community Relations Coordinator with the Julie Rogers Gift of Life to show their support for the anti-smoking program.
Berry said March is really international Kick Butts Month. Berry pointed out each year tobacco takes the lives of half a million Americans and the easiest way to avoid cancer is to not smoke. She added that although Kick Butts Month is especially observed in the United States it is observed across the entire world. Berry concluded by encouraging everyone to share with one other person the dangers of cigarette smoking and you might help save a life.
