Union Pacific Railroad has installed the Green Avenue wayside horns that have been needed before Orange gets a “quiet zone” to stop trains from blowing at every crossing. But the quiet zone will not come immediately, according to Jim Wolf, city public works director.
“I can’t tell you when, but it’s close,” he said.
The city and railroad company will go through several steps before the quiet zone is implemented. Union Pacific and the city will need to run tests of the horns at the crossing. Wolf said “our folks will also go through a short training process” about the wayside horns.
After the testing, the city will send letters to every railroad company that uses the tracks notifying them that the city has met the guidelines for a quiet zone. Wolf said the railroad companies have 21 days from the receipt of the notification to have their engineers stop the horns.
Green Avenue will be the only crossing with wayside horns. The city closed several street crossings and put up yellow lane barriers before the crossings on other streets. -Margaret Toal, KOGT-
