
The City of West Orange will hold its municipal election May 7 in a joint election with the West Orange-Cove School District. Both polling locations will be in the West Orange Community Center on Austin Street. The City Council approved calling the election during its meeting Monday evening. The aldermen positions of Mike Shugart, Shirley Bonnin, and Dale Dardeau will be on the at-large ballot in May. All three have filed for re-election.
Following a closed executive session during the meeting the Council approved Joy Simonton and Carl Thibodeaux to serve as alternate judges for the municipal court. Rex Peveto was also chosen to be the alternate attorney for the city. All three will serve as needed. Thibodeaux said he is pleased to serve the City of West Orange in any capacity. Thibodeaux indicated he was approached by Mayor Roy McDonald to help serve as the assistant municipal judge and his response was he is always willing to help the city he loves.
Two volunteers, Michael and Anthony Mason, were accepted as members of the West Orange Volunteer Fire Department by the City Council. The Council heard a good report on the city’s audit by Sandersen, Knox & Co. Mayor McDonald responded that he is very proud of the excellent staff in the West Orange City Hall that handles all the recordkeeping. Police Chief Mike Stelly was approved by the City Council to proceed with participating in a grant to purchase body-worn cameras for all his officers.
