The representatives of Way Service gave a report Tuesday to the Commissioners Court on their energy efficiency study of the county’s buildings. County Judge Brint Carlton summarized the report saying the county will need to make improvements to the electrical, air conditioning, and mechanical equipment in most of the county’s buildings especially the jail. Way also looked at the options to repairing the marble façade on the front of the courthouse. Carlton said the Commissioners Court will call a workshop next week to discuss what the scope of the repairs is going to be.
Ken Morris with Way Service estimated the cost of the improvement projects could run as high as $6.2 million. The Commissioners will discuss the details more in depth at the workshop next week. A complete written report should be available to the Court by February 11 according to Morris.
Following the report by Way Service which detailed the need for improving much of the electrical and air conditioning equipment at the Orange County Jail, Sheriff Keith Merritt was proud to report to the Commissioners Court another perfect inspection for his staff in the jail. Merritt pointed out that since no member of the Commissioners Court has ever been incarcerated it would be difficult for them to realize the stress and problems faced by the jail personnel on a daily basis plus the dealing with old and faltering equipment as mentioned by Way Service in their report. Merritt commended Jail Captain Donald Harmon for the jail’s perfect inspection. Captain Harmon accepted the thanks and praise from the Commissioners on the perfect jail inspection, and passed the credit on to his staff for their excellent work. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-
