Friday night the Bridge City Cardinals served notice they will be a factor in the district playoff hunt this season. West Orange-Stark came to Bridge City riding a two-game district winning streak. The Mustangs had their string snapped and the Cardinals are tied with them in district after a 50-43 victory at the Bridge City High School gym.
Both schools now have records of 2-2 in district play. The schedule favors Bridge City next week with games against Orangefield and Hamshire-Fannett to complete the first half of the district games. Orangefield and Hamshire-Fannett played Friday night both seeking their first district win. West Orange-Stark goes to Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Tuesday and plays at home against the state-ranked Silsbee Tigers next Friday.
The Cardinals handled the Mustangs pressure defense relatively well. They did commit 20 turnovers for the contest, but did a good job of spreading things out to setup more one on one situations which worked to their advantage for the most part. Handling the ball were Graydon Glover and Ryan Mirabella. Both scored in double figures. Glover was high scorer in the game with 13, and Mirabella tacked on 10 as he made all 7 of his free throws to go with a 3-point basket.
Rebounding was another factor that was to Bridge City’s advantage. The twin posts of Dane Piper and Hunter Wiegreffe were solid inside. Piper scored all 12 of his points in the first half. Wiegreffe tallied 7 for the Cardinals including two free throws late in the game.
Down the stretch free throw shooting was pivotal for the Cardinals. Wiegreffe’s two were part of five straight points from the free throw line to close out the scoring for Bridge City. The other three were made by Justyn Romero who finished the night with 8 points. The Cardinals were 20 of 33 from the charity stripe on the night. West Orange-Stark was 8 of 12 in free throw shooting, but compared to the 20 made by Bridge City that proved to be the difference.
The Mustangs substituted freely throughout the game keeping fresh legs on the court. The result was West Orange-Stark’s subs outscored the Bridge City bench 10-0 led by Mandel Turner-King with six. Starter Kentavious Miller scored 11 points. The Mustangs’ leading scorer Thomas Wallace was held to a single 3-pointer until the second half when he added 8 points to end the game tied with Miller at 11. -Dan Perrine, KOGT-

In the first game of the evening Orangefield’s 7th Grade B Team took on the Hamshire-Fannett Shorthorns. The Cats started off hot with a quick 3 coming from Jordan Ritter and the team held a 3-2 after the first. Then things took a turn for the worse for the Bobcats as they were outscored 12-2 in the 2nd quarter, which led to the halftime score being 14-5 in favor of the Shorthorns. The Bobcats played much better defensively in the 2nd half only allowing 8 points, while also adding 7 of their own. Unfortunately they couldn’t recover from their poor 2nd quarter and fell to H-F, 22-12. Orangefield was led in scoring by Garrison Hughes with 4 points and drops to 1-6 on the season.
The boys on the Bobcat 8th Grade “B” team were ready to build on their successful season last night as they faced off against the Hamshire-Fannett Shorthorns. The Bobcats began the game with an impressive defensive stand, holding Hamshire-Fannett to a 4 point first half. The defensive attack was led by Cade Kile, Kade Grozier, and Jacob Harvey who were all very active with multiple steals, blocks, and deflections. The defensive trend would continue throughout the second half as well, keeping the average points allowed per quarter to a measly 2. The Bobcats rallied behind the defense, producing solid offensive support with 23 points on the night. The 8th Grade Bobcats saw their 2016 offensive struggles continue last night versus the Shorthorns of Hamshire-Fannett Middle School. Orangefield had a very tough 1st quarter in which they were outhustled and outscored to the tune of 8 to nothing. The Cats fought back in the second and third quarter but could never quite make up the distance on the early deficit they found themselves in. One bright spot was the play of guard, Chase Broussard. Chase shot the ball at a high percentage on the night and drained a pair of three’s that helped him earn a team leading 10 points. Kayson Dubois also pitched in 7 in the 31-19 defeat. The loss moves the Bobcats to 3-6 as they look to get ready to cross Cow Bayou to take on the Cardinals next Thursday.
