Political consultants and power couple Mary Matalin and James Carville will bring their unique insights and humor to the Lutcher Theater on February 15 at 6:30 p.m. The free public event is sponsored by Lamar State College-Orange as part of its lecture series.
Dr. Michael Shahan, president of LSC-O, told KOGT’s Gary Stelly Wednesday morning the couple will appear “right in the middle” of primary season for the presidential election.
Matalin grew up outside of Chicago while Carville grew up a few miles from New Orleans in a small town named after his grandfather. Both made careers as political consultants with Matalin working for Republican campaigns and Carville advising Democratic campaigns.
By the time the 1992 presidential election arrived, Matalin was helping lead the re-election campaign for President George H.W. Bush. Carville was one of the brains behind getting Bill Clinton elected and is credited with the line “it’s the economy, stupid.” They were engaged at the time and married in New Orleans in 1993.
Since then they have become popular political commentators and authors. Matalin and Carville share their disagreements on politics and add a generous portion of humor. “Both of them are pretty quick,” Dr. Shahan said. In addition, they have been featured in movies and television shows.
The couple moved from the Washington, D.C., area in 2008 to New Orleans, where Carville political science at Tulane University. He also is a co-host of a satellite radio sports show. They have two daughters. Magazine articles have reported they do not talk about politics at home.
Their books written together include All’s Fair in Love, War and Running for President in 1995 and Love and War: Twenty Years, Two Daughters, Three Presidents and One Louisiana Home.
Dr. Shahan said Matalin and Carville will speak onstage and answer questions. Then they will be available to sign books and programs.
