Having won their opening game of district two weeks ago the Bridge City Cardinals used last week’s bye to heal from the tough first half of the season. Coach Dwayne DuBois says the Cardinals also used the time to get ready for the Jasper Bulldogs who seemed to have turned their season around with the start of district action.
The return to the starting lineup for Jasper of quarterback Tiger Williams is what DuBois points to as the reason for the Bulldogs success since the start of district. Williams is a heck of a football player in DuBois’ opinion and is the one that makes the Jasper offense go. The Bulldogs also have a solid running back and some dangerous wide receivers that Williams can get the ball to. Coach DuBois admits sarcastically it should be a fun night for the Cardinals’ defensive ball club. The Bulldogs have also made some changes in personnel on defense which have made them much improved on that side of the ball as well.
Bridge City has won four of five so far, and Coach DuBois sees a lot of positives from the Cardinals to this point of the season. DuBois reminds that in this his first year at Bridge City he has instituted a new offense and a new defense which the Cardinals are picking up very well. The coach points out that the offensive line is not only learning better what to do, but the linemen are learning why they are doing it which has made them block better. The backs understand better where the linemen will be and are learning where their cuts need to be which has made them better runners. DuBois thinks the defense struggled last week in the district opener against Cleveland, but he is not concerned because the Cardinals are getting better and the coaches corrected one thing on the defense. DuBois is confident the Cardinals will get after it more and more this week.
The Bulldogs are 2-0 in district, the Cardinals won their only district game so one of them will have a district loss after Friday night. DuBois gives the keys for Bridge City to stay undefeated in district. Containing Tiger Williams and slowing down the Bulldogs offense will be the first key for the Cardinals Coach DuBois states. Also, avoiding the turnovers like in the Cleveland game where Bridge City was fortunate to win despite four turnovers. He believes it still comes down to winning the war in the trenches, but DuBois emphasizes the team that wins the turnovers battle and controls the tempo will usually win the game concluding that should be the case this week also.
The Bridge City Cardinals are on the road Friday night against the Jasper Bulldogs. The game will be carried live Friday night at 7:30 on KOGT with the rebroadcast of the game at 7:00 AM on Saturday.
