For the second year in a row the Orangefield Bobcats beat the Newton Eagles. As good as that victory felt the Bobcats cannot rest on their laurels because this week they play the Houston Worthing Colts who are 4-1 on the season.
Coach Josh Smalley says the Colts have one of the outstanding quarterbacks in the state of Texas. Smalley indicates Worthing runs the Spread with Alfred Robertson at the controls. Robertson has 961 yards passing for 11 touchdowns and has run the ball for 850 yards and 10 touchdowns. Smalley views Robertson as one of the best athletes that will come to Southeast Texas this season. His brother Johntiz is a dangerous wide receiver with catches for over 700 yards and 9 touchdowns. Coach Smalley admits the Bobcats will have to pick their poison by stopping the run which could leave them open to deep passes, or if they choose to double team the receivers that could open things up for the quarterback to take off with the ball and run. The coach concedes the Orangefield defense has a tremendous challenge ahead of it Friday.
Orangefield scored over 50 points against the Worthing defense last year and opponents are averaging 37 points a game this season. Coach Smalley theorizes the game may come down to how well the Bobcats control the ball and keep Robertson and the Colts’ Spread off the field. Smalley points out the Bobcats had some success running the ball against the 31 Defense of Worthing previously and will try to do that again Friday night to keep Alfred and his brother on the sidelines. If the Bobcats can do that Smalley believes they’ve got a good chance of winning.
Turnovers and penalties are always a key to any football game, but Smalley believes the contest Friday will come down to how well the Bobcats contain the explosive Mr. Robertson. Smalley compares Robertson to Hamshire Fannett’s Kendrick King who has been an Orangefield district opponent the last two seasons and the Bobcats will face again in the final game of the regular season. The big key for Smalley is the Bobcats need to be good open field tacklers to limit Robertson’s production while also double teaming his brother Johntiz. Doing that they hopefully will come out on top.
