The Bridge City School District unveiled a monument to the state champion 1966 Cardinals football team Friday. The monument was created by former athletic booster club president and school board member Tom Orozco.
The idea for the monument was done, Orozco said, as a promise to Steve Worster a star of that Bridge City team. Orozco related how Worster had spoke at a booster club meeting about 12 years ago and asked Orozco if he could help raise funds for a monument to the 1966 state champions. Orozco later moved to Round Rock, Texas and was asked by someone there where he was from. Orozco answered Bridge City and the person immediately replied that is where Steve Worster is from. It was at that point in October of last year that Orozco remembered he owed Worster a promise. Orozco stated the monument is done as a tribute to the Cardinals of 1966, but also to serve as an inspiration to the kids today and in the future to what hard work and working as a team can achieve.
The monument carved in black marble in the shape of Texas with the name of each member of the 1966 Cardinals team engraved on the front was designed by Orozco with some suggestions from current Bridge City Athletic Director Richard Briggs. Orozco got the monument sculpted in the Dallas area. Elite Monuments produced the sculpted monument and installed it at the stadium because Orozco said he wanted it done right.
More than a hundred spectators watched as Ramona Wilson the wife of H. W. “Chief” Wilson the Cardinals’ coach in 1966 did the actual unveiling. The monument is located at the north end of Larry B. Ward Stadium.
