Last week was a bye week for the Vidor Pirates, and Coach Jeff Mathews says the Pirates have used the time to get better and to get ready for the Nederland Bulldogs. Mathews states Vidor has used the two weeks to extensively get ready for Nederland, and the coach thinks the Pirates are better than they were two weeks ago.
Friday’s game is the opening of district play for Vidor. Nederland was Coach Mathews’ preseason pick as the district favorite primarily because of Coach Larry Neumann and his excellent staff which make adjustments so quickly. Mathews points out some of the standouts for the Bulldogs on offense. Coach Mathews starts with Austin Krautz who the Bulldogs get the football all over the field. Also, Conner Perkins and Tavian Mayfield figure in the Nederland offensive game plan according to Mathews. The Bulldogs have a big offensive line. The Vidor coach recognizes that the Pirates’ defense always has to be at its best against the Nederland offense and it is going to have to do it again Friday night.
The Nederland coaching staff has faced the Vidor Slot-T enough times and with likewise two weeks to get ready, Coach Mathews knows the Bulldogs’ defense will be ready for any wrinkle Vidor’s offense can run at them. Mathews acknowledges the excellent work of Defensive Coordinator Delbert Spell in gearing the Bulldogs’ defense to stop the Pirates’ offense and always presents a tremendous challenge for Vidor. Coach Mathews says that the Pirates have most of their offense back from last year so they know what to expect from Nederland, and with two weeks to get ready hopefully that’ll help the Pirates.
Mathews states the key for a Pirate win is pretty simple. Protecting the football is the key for Vidor, Mathews admits that when the Pirates protect the football they’re good, when they don’t protect the ball they’re very average.
