Two men are being sent to state prison after cases of domestic violence heard in the 163rd State District Court during the past week.
A jury this week decided 41-year-old Herman Devitt Barber was guilty of aggravated assault on his older half-brother. He was eligible for probation, but the jury decided to give him a punishment of four years in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Krispin Walker said Barber was indicted for aggravated assault for what happened on May 18, 2018, outside of Vidor. She said there was a family dispute over property. Barber threatened to kill his 62-year-old half-brother by putting a gun in his mouth. He also hit the brother on the head with the gun. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
In the other case, State District Judge Dennis Powell sentenced 30-year-old Elijah Munoz of Beaumont to nine years in prison after Munoz pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
Walker said Munoz had a relationship with a woman living in Bridge City. He pushed her down so hard she hit her head. The injury caused bleeding that required brain surgery at a Houston hospital.
The February 13, 2018, assault was investigated by the Bridge City Police Department. ffffffff
