Commissioners Change Day and Time For Meeting
In a vote that was more or less previewed at a workshop on Monday, the Commissioners Court approved Tuesday supporting the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC). The county will fund the EDC at $375,000 during the next fiscal year. Executive Director of the EDC Jessica Hill requested the $375,000 which is less than the last year’s funding of $525,000. William F. Barstow
William F. Barstow died peacefully on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. He was 81. The cause was complications from Parkinson's disease. Though he spent his career in the machine tool business, Bill loved music and was a lifelong devotee of choral singing. He sang in the Cornell Glee Club and was a member of the Vocal Majority barbershop chorus from 1974-1989, which won five SPEBSQSA gold medals during that period. He was the VM's president in 1984. WO Approves Tax Rate
The City Council in West Orange unanimously approved its budget and the tax rate for next year during its meeting Monday. The tax rate was increased to $0.47 per $100 value. Mayor Roy McDonald explained the reason for the increase was because of reduced property values in West Orange. Tropical Storm Harvey destroyed several houses, damaged many other homes, and the Orange County Appraisal District lowered appraised values on property across the board. Orange Police Weekend Reports
Many of the weekend calls to the Orange Police Department involved family disputes, including one in which a husband and wife fought about a Facebook post. In another case, an ex-partner is suspected of taking two TVs and a chihuahua. Officers answered a 911 call Friday night at 8:11 to the 900 block of DuPont Drive in the Cove neighborhood. EDC Supported At Workshop
The Commissioners Court, representatives from most of the municipalities, and business leaders from across the county discussed for over two hours on Monday what amount the county should fund the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) next year.
