Sales Tax Numbers Still Up
Sales taxes are beginning to slow down after Tropical Storm Harvey, but are still up across Orange County compared to pre-Harvey levels. Harvey brought up to 60 inches of rain late last August and flooded thousands of houses. Sales taxes rose drastically as people began replacing their belongings and rebuilding. The Texas Comptroller's Office has issued to the entities payments for taxes covering July sales. All local entities saw an increase from July 2017. LCM Students Ace STAAR Test
Little Cypress-Mauriceville students who made perfect scores on one of their STAAR tests last semester, were celebrated at the Board of Trustees meeting on Monday evening, September 10. Eight of the eleven students receiving perfect scores were in attendance. The students are now in the next grade and some on a different campus. Concert Cancelled; Boat Races Still On
Due to unfavorable weather conditions in the weekend forecast, the Mixx Fixxer concert, scheduled for Saturday, September 15, at the City of Orange Boat Ramp has been cancelled. The decision has been made after City staff attended a National Weather Service webinar that predicts a forecast of 70% chance of thunderstorms Friday and 50% chance of thunderstorms Saturday. Cards Host Anahuac In Home Opener
Last week was a turning point for the Bridge City Cardinals according to Coach Allen DeShazo. The final score indicated a loss but coach sees some positive signs that Bridge City is moving forward to be a competitive football team. A definite bright spot was the re-emergence of Andy Lara at fullback. Lara carried the ball 18 times for over 100 yards. He will get more carries this week. During the second half against Jasper, Bridge City focused on the basics, tackling better, lined up better, blocked better, and ran better. Bears Battle Bulldogs
The Orange Bowl was played last week as Little Cypress-Mauriceville played West Orange-Stark. The Bears’ Head Coach Randy Crouch said the team played better in the game. Other some bumps and bruises there were no serious injuries for the Bears. Although the score may not have reflected it Crouch believes LC-M showed some improvement in several areas from the first week. Crouch is hopeful the Bears will continue to do that. The second half against West Orange-Stark was better for Little Cypress-Mauriceville. The kicking game improved against the Mustangs. Hurricane Ike-10 Years Ago Today
Hurricane Ike started forming off the coast of Africa on August 28, 2008. By Sept. 4 it had reached maximum sustained winds of 145mph, making it a category 4 storm. Just after 2am on Sept. 13, Ike made landfall near Galveston Island as a category 2 storm with winds of 110mph, putting Orange County on the wet side of the storm. Rita in 2005 was considered a dry storm and Ike certainly made up the difference. Reports of homes that did not receive water in Bridge City totaled less than two dozen.
