At approximately 10:00a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on FM 2802 (Texla Road) in Orange County. The crash is North of Vidor. Preliminary reports indicate that a 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling westbound on FM 2802. The driver of the Chevrolet slowed to make a left turn into a private driveway when the vehicle was rear-ended by a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle, a 30-year-old man from Vidor, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Derry Dunn at the scene. Another Step For Repairing Courthouse
Another step toward repairing the marble façade above the front steps to the Orange County Courthouse was taken this week. Kurt Guidry the county’s Maintenance Director and Commissioner Barry Burton met with an architect at the Courthouse to inspect the marble. Don LaBiche from Beaumont inspected the marble from the ground all the way to the top of the roof. LaBiche evaluated the marble which has pulled away from the Courthouse structure and is currently being held in place with scaffolding. Burton Applies For SETRPC Post
The executive director of the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) has announced his resignation to take a position in the private sector. Shaun P. Davis will leave his position as the executive director effective September 28 after serving as the head of the tri-county organization for 11 years. Applying for the position of executive director of the SETRPC is Orange County Commissioner Barry Burton. Orangefield High School students in Mrs. Spears' Principles of Education and Training class wrote and illustrated children’s books. Each book had to contain a rhyme scheme and moral. They also had to include comprehension questions at the end and close with a color activity including the books characters. Orange Extends No Fee Permits
People in Orange still doing construction and remodeling after Tropical Storm Harvey will continue to get a break from the city. The Orange City Council has voted to extend a policy for another six months that exempts people repairing Harvey damage from paying building permit fees. The council also extended the use of trailers in residential neighborhoods. Last September, the council voted to allow RVs and FEMA trailers in residential yards for a year. Coming off a loss in Week 1 meant some changes for West Orange-Stark prior to last week’s game. Coach Cornel Thompson reflected on how the Mustangs responded in the second game of the season. Faces were changed on defense and on offense. Thompson commented, “Our kids went out performed and played hard, they made a few mistakes, but they did play hard and that’s what we were looking for, for 48 minutes.” This Friday night will be a big test of the new attitude for the Mustangs as they play the state ranked Newton Eagles. Bobcats Have Toughest Test Yet
The Orangefield Bobcats have started the season with two straight lopsided victories. Coach Josh Smalley pointed out the positive signs from the win over Livingston and areas that still need attention. There were no injuries in the win. The Bobcats tackled better than in the first game. Special teams did better, but the rain has limited out door practices which are necessary to work on the kicking game. Orangefield missed three point-after kicks and had a punt blocked.
