Home sweet home. The Bridge City Cardinals played its first home game of the 2018 football season, and it was just what the Red Birds needed as the Cardinals claimed a 13-6 hard-fought victory over the Anahuac Panthers on Friday night at Larry B. Ward Stadium. Mother Nature made the field a soggy mess rather quickly thanks to the numerous rain showers throughout the week, but that worked right into the Cardinals favor as Bridge City outgained the Panthers in total yards with 246 to 193 on the night. After Orangefield’s initial struggle to move the ball, Shepherd started the game with a handoff and a break up the middle for the first touchdown of the game. Orangefield followed this up with a couple of handoffs to chip away the yards before handing of to Chase Broussard for a long run that put them just short of the goal. Three of the four biggest plays of the night for the Newton Eagles all resulted in touchdowns as the defending 3A D2 State Champs beat West Orange-Stark on a muddy field Friday night. After a scoreless first quarter, Newton opened the second quarter with a 20 yard pass from Josh Foster to Tamauzia Brown.  In the third quarter it was Foster to Brown again, this time from 30 yards. The Deweyville Pirates won their second straight game, giving their fans a nail biting 22-20 win over Kountze in a game that was moved to the turf in Lumberton. Lance Wilhelm lead the offense with 125 yards on 16 carries and two scores.  Keevin Gordon tallied 44 yds. and a TD.
