The Orange City Council Monday was faced with a deadline and voted 6 to 1 for a tax increase. The tax rate will be 80.5 cents per $100 valuation. City Attorney Guy Goodson told the council the city charter requires a tax rate be approved on two separate readings before Thursday. The new budget year starts on October 1. The second reading will be today during a regular scheduled council meeting. The vote needed to have at least five of the seven members in favor of the tax rate. Family Robbed and Dog Shot (update)
Update: The robbers who killed a Labrador retriever Monday night stole marijuana and also hit one of the victims in the head with a pistol. The victim was bleeding above an eyebrow when police arrived, but refused medical treatment. Orange Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the four male victims were ages 16 through 20 and no one else was in the house. The robbers knocked on the door and one of the victims opened the door. He said the victims told officers "a small amount" of marijuana on a table was stolen. Sub Courthouse Taking Shape
Newton County Commissioner Gene Thompson is counting down the days to move in the new sub courthouse in Deweyville. The 5400 square foot building is being built on Hwy. 87, just north of the Hwy. 12 intersection. "Higher ground," Thompson said after the other office received seven feet of water during recent floods. Sounds like the building will fill up quick according to Thompson. Little Cypress-Mauriceville battled the weather and Vidor last week. Thunderstorms delayed the start of the game for 45 minutes and the Pirates defeated the Bears 44-7. LC-M Head Coach Randy Crouch evaluated the Bears performance in the game.
