At 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a burglary in progress at the Newton County Correctional Center (originally Fillyaw Correctional Center). It was reported by a citizen that a vehicle was inside the locked compound and there was a lot of noise coming from the area. On Tuesday, September 25th 2018 at approximately 11:00PM, Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division were working in the area of North 105 at Highway 1131. Investigators observed a white in color Nissan pick-up truck traveling north on Highway 105. The subject vehicle was observed traveling partially in the turning lane and was then observed to travel onto the shoulder of the roadway. On September 26, 1774 John Chapman was born in Massachusetts. In his early twenties, Chapman began traveling across the country planting apple (and pear) trees and orchards, buying books, telling stories and then giving books away. Chapmen became known as Johnny Appleseed. He would even travel many miles to bring trees back to health when he received word that they were ailing. Appleseed became known as wise, caring and kind. Court Votes 3-2 To Adopt Budget
The Commissioners Court adopted the county budget for next fiscal year Tuesday in a split vote. The vote was 3 to 2 to adopt the budget. The Court unanimously adopted the tax rate of $0.542 per $100 value for next year. County Judge Dean Crooks was joined by Commissioners Johnny Trahan and John Gothia in approving a revised budget completed that morning by County Auditor Pennee Schmitt. Former district opponent Silsbee defeated Bridge City last Friday night. Head Coach Allen DeShazo of the Cardinals reflected on the loss to the Tigers. The Cardinals gave better effort as the game progressed. They fell behind early, but still played hard and fought back.
