A 16-year-old girl from Orange died after being ejected from a car in a head-on collision in Tyler County Wednesday afternoon. DPS Sergeant Stephanie Davis said at approximately 2:45p.m., the Texas Department Troopers responded to a head-on collision on FM 1013 in Tyler County. The crash occurred five (5) miles East of Spurger. Preliminary reports indicate that a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling eastbound on FM 1013. Bobcats Expect Slobberknocker Friday
This week is the start of district games for Orangefield. The Bobcats had their bye last week. Coach Josh Smalley indicated the coaches and players worked on the basics during the week going over fundamentals, conditioning, and lifting weights took up much of the time in the locker room. The bye week came at a good time with district just around the corner. Orange Police Department Captain Robert Enmon said he can give no comment about an investigation into officers spanking a 13-year-old girl at the request of her mother last week. "It is an internal matter that is being investigated," said Enmon, who is the department's official spokesperson. Orange Tax Rate By The Numbers
The Orange City Council made it official. The city has a budget of $36.9 million and a tax rate of 80.5 cents per $100 valuation. The budget includes a 2 percent pay raise for employees. The council Tuesday had the second and final readings for the 2018-19 budget year, which begins Monday. The votes were unanimous. The tax rate was complicated because of the loss of property values after Tropical Storm Harvey. The current tax rate is 71.7 cents per $100. 16th Street Needs Better Presentation
Orange Mayor Larry Spears Jr. is going to get involved to improve the appearance of the 16th Street commercial district by writing letters to business owners and visiting the businesses. On Tuesday, City Planning Director Kelvin Knauf outlined 17 ideas for 16th Street, which is the main entrance off Interstate 10 into town. The council liked the ideas. Councilwoman Questions Judges Position
Orange District 4 Councilor Annette Pernell Tuesday criticized the city manager for not following council instruction to get applications for the municipal judge position in 2018. However, City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre said the council approved a two-year contract last year with longtime City Judge Jerry Pennington.
