FEMA Grants $3.9 million to Orange for Debris Removal
Austin- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $3.9 million to the City of Orange for debris removal following Hurricane Harvey. The city removed 225,000 cubic yards of debris from public rights of way. The cost of the debris removal in Orange is nearly $4.3 million. The grant of nearly $3.9 million is the federal share of the cost and requires a 10 percent nonfederal match by the applicant, or $389,939. Voter Registration Deadline Is Oct. 9
With politics in the spotlight every day, people in Orange County are making sure they are registered to vote in the November general election. The registration deadline is Tuesday. Besides the regular elections, the West Orange-Cove CISD is having a school bond election. County Elections Administrator Tina Barrow said almost as many people have filled out new registration forms as during the 2016 presidential election year. BC Raising Garbage Rates
Garbage and sewer rates are going up in Bridge City. The City Council on Tuesday approved a four percent increase for garbage collection in the city. The sewer rate will go up a $1.50 for minimum usage. City Manager Jerry Jones explained the reasons for both increases. The garbage increase is the first in a couple of three years. The city is just passing on the same four percent increase the garbage company is charging Bridge City. The increase in sewer is to compensate for the additional charges the city is paying for testing. Vidor To Rebuild Oak Forest School
The Vidor ISD has received FEMA approval to rebuild Oak Forest Elementary School, which was flooded during Tropical Storm Harvey last year. Students at the school have been divided between Pine Forest and Vidor elementary schools. The district Wednesday announced the cost estimates have been submitted and FEMA last week agreed to the plans. Spokesperson Sally Andrews said the district worked with the consulting firm Disaster Recovery Services to give information showing that damages to the campus were more than 50 percent of the value of the school. Woman Dies In Accident
A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Vidor on Highway 12 at Evangeline Drive. Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll said the woman is 71-year-old Betty Ingle Carter of Orange County. The crash was about 3 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection and involved a Kia SUV and a Ford pickup truck. Evangeline Drive is also FM 1132. The intersection has a traffic light and Vidor police are investigating to determine what happened. Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Rodney Price ruled the woman dead at the scene.
